Marley Coffee

When I recommend a brand like Marley coffee K-Cups, it surprises me just how many people have never heard of this line of coffee before; Where it came from, how it started, etc. With a name like Marley as the brand, people are bound to have some questions about it. Being a fan of Marley Coffee myself, I feel compelled to let everyone know just how great the coffees are and how amazing the Marley Coffee brand is, even beyond just giving you a delicious cup of Joe.

Markcol President Mark Abernathy with Rohan Marley, founder of Marley Coffee!

Let’s take it back to 1999 when Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley, found himself purchasing a 52-acre farm in Jamaica in an area known for its coffee. At the time he knew little about the land he purchased and the great coffee that would come from it. His intent when he bought that beautiful piece of land was to return to his father’s roots and become a farmer to help support the economy in Jamaica. And just like that, a trip to Ethiopia in 2000 would be the reason why Marley Coffee was born. He found a passion for coffee and finding great beans for his brand. But like I’ve said, Marley Coffee is so much more than just some great tasting coffee. You can drink a great cup of coffee and be satisfied, but what should satisfy the seasoned coffee consumer is the fact that SO much more goes into great coffee than just harvesting and roasting. Lucky for us, Rohan seems to be the perfect man for the job.

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, of civilization and Rastafari. It has special meaning to my family. We’re going to start this company with Ethiopian coffee.”- Rohan Marley.

What Rohan wanted to do was share his passion for coffee with the world. Which is exactly what he has done. His farm soon became certified organic and Marley Coffee uses only Rainforest Alliance certified beans. These facts may not mean much when you read it on your box of k-cups, but to the communities in Jamaica that put all of their hard work into your morning coffee, it means everything. Drinking a coffee from a brand that believes in the process almost makes it taste that much better. Like his father, Rohan shares a respect for nature and being one with the Earth. Sounds like the perfect principal to build a coffee business on. Also like his father, he has a passion for music. One of my favourite things about Marley coffee is how it has been tied to the famous music of Bob Marley. From Buffalo Soldier to One Love, could you really use a name like Marley and not include the incredible music of the inspiration behind the brand? For die hard Bob Marley fans, the choice of which coffee they should drink is clear. But the name is no gimmick. Even if you aren’t a Bob Marley fan, you can’t deny that these are some of the best coffees you can find. I’ve yet to hear someone say “oh, I really hated that Marley Coffee you recommended to me last time”.  No joke.

“People always ask me this question—why coffee? I wouldn’t say I was not gifted with music. My real passion belongs to the earth.” –Rohan Marley

Another great thing about Marley Coffee is its involvement with the Water Wise initiative. Another term you may be unfamiliar with, and a term I didn’t know much about either until recently. After reading about it and watching the videos on it, I don’t think I could go back to drinking coffees that DIDN’T support this movement. You may not know that harvesting coffee is actually a filthy process. It leaves rivers and streams so polluted that they become unusable. Imagine someone coming into your community or your home, taking away your water that you use for laundry, bathing, drinking, and cooking and using it to give a product to someone else. That’s what it would feel like to live in the places your favourite coffees come from, if it weren’t for Water Wise. This movement takes that filthy water and reroutes it, cleans it and makes sure none of it ends up in the rivers that are vital to everyday life in places like Ethiopia, Jamaica and Kenya.
